Mensagem da Presidente

The Instituto de Apoio à Criança (Child Care Institute) came about through the inspiration of Dr. João dos Santos, a sensible and prestigious doctor and teacher, who knew that "a children's policy should be the work of the entire community with the active and generalized participation of the public in coordination with institutions".
The IAC is a non-profit organization, which was founded in 1983 by a group of people from different walks of life: doctors, magistrates, teachers, psychologists, lawyers, sociologists, social services professionals and many others. Our main goal is to contribute to the fundamental development of children, through defending and promoting their rights with regards to family, school, health, social security and recreational activities.
We aim to stimulate, support and disseminate the work of everyone who seeks new answers to the problems that children in Portugal face, as well as, collaborate with national and international organizations with similar interests.
The IAC has worked for this through information and sensibilization programs and direct intervention projects in areas that were not previously covered by Government institutions, or other entities, to defend better conditions, more well-being and more dignity for children.
Within the scope of its projects, the IAC holds information and sensibilization campaigns, and intervenes directly where the state, or other entities, does not. Our direct interventions include Serviços SOS-Criança/Criança Desaparecida (SOS-Child Services/Missing Child); Projecto Rua/Em Família para Crescer (Street Project/A Family to Grow Up); recreational activities; legal services; and humanizing the Children's Services and Study Centre, documentation and information about children.
Changing times give way to new realities, which the IAC attempts to keep up with by developing innovative ways to intervene in children's lives, such as through street and school entertainers, solidarity officers, institutional mediation, youth volunteers and university students, especially from the areas of Social and Human Sciences.
Along these lines, in 2010, the IAC expanded its presence on the Internet through this website, Facebook, the blog "Crianças a Torto e a Diretos", etc. Thus providing more information and contributing to the creation of a participative culture, thanks to the development of information and communication technologies, globalization and the evolution of citizenship with the intent of uniting people in the Defence and Promotion of Children's Rights.
Since 1983, the IAC has been important in serving children, families and the community, especially for many children who lack support in guaranteeing their rights, concerns and needs.
We know that we are not going to solve all the problems of the children who are at risk, unloved, missing, sexually exploited and who suffer so painfully the consequences of a society that is too often inhuman and socially unjust.
As Dr. João dos Santos, founding member of the IAC, used to say, "humanity's destiny is determined by how it is brought forth, in the warmth of the arms that open to it, in the ideology that envelops it and in the liberty that it is given to imagine, experience and think".
I wish you pleasant browsing on the IAC´s web site.
